5 Benefits of Training with a Workout Log Book |

Working out is hard. There, I said it. You know it, I know it, we all know it, and yet, this doesn’t change the reality of it. To conquer our eating and workout goals we spend exorbitant amounts of money on sweet new fitness gear, expensive supplements, and gym memberships we use a few times and then pay for the rest of the year. But when it comes to being more consistent in the gym one of the most simple, powerful, and cheapest ways to do so is writing out our workouts. Here are just a few reasons that an exercise log book will help you crush it in the gym this year. A boost of confidence. There are fewer things more comforting and confidence-inducing than seeing how far along you have come along in the gym. Being able to flip through the pages of your training journal, looking back at all of your hard work, will give you a surge of pride and confidence that is difficult to replicate, and impossible to ignore. It will help keep you motivated. Motivation, for many athletes and gymgoers, is the real struggle. How do we stay inspired to hit the gym when we are exhausted after a long day at work? Or when we are stressed out and all we’d rather be doing is sitting on the couch crushing beers and watching Netflix? While writing out your workouts won’t solve all of your life’s problems, it will encourage you to be more consistent and habitual with your workouts. Journaling your time in the gym will become a ritual, and like any ritual, the more you do it, the more you can lean on it to get you in the gym on those days when you aren’t feeling the most motivated. Helps you paint a clear path of progress. One of the things just about everyone struggles with at some point is determining an accurate rate of progression. When we lack the self-awareness of how long progress actually takes it can lead to overblown expectations which end up demoralizing and discouraging us prematurely. Journaling your workouts will give you a much clearer indication of how long it will take you to get to your goals. You will stay focused. When you walk into the gym without a game plan it can be easy to lose focus on what you are there to do. You end up getting caught up talking to friends and fellow lifters, get sidetracked, and generally don’t have as good a workout as you could. If you aren’t writing out your workout and tracking your results it can be easy to forget what the whole point of showing up to the gym was in the first place. While big goals and great intentions are great, they are just daydreams if you aren’t tracking and recording them. Increased self-awareness. Most of us live in a state of denial and ignorance when it comes to our training and how our lifestyle influences it. Things like sleep, nutrition and stress management all play a massive role in how we perform in the gym, and yet, for far too many of us we don’t even consider it when it comes to performance. Add these things to your workout journal and you will quickly learn how powerful a good night of rest is, and how much more energized you feel after eating a few quality meals.
